The small town of La Chaise Dieu is primarily famous for its abbey, built in the 14th century at the wish of Clement VI, then Pope in Avignon. The municipality adopted the Latin equivalent of the name of the monastic fraternity that lived there well before the city was established.
The architecture of this abbey is a flamboyant showcase of Gothic art, all the more astonishing as it was erected in just eight years, between 1344 and 1352. Moreover, this historical and touristic site houses a collection of 14 enormous recently restored Flemish tapestries, designated as a National Treasure. The staging, lighting, and accessibility of the works accentuate the exceptional nature of the exhibition.
For the past three decades, the abbey has been inhabited by a community of monks who, by conducting the church tours themselves, powerfully convey the spirituality of the place.

In the village, art is everywhere through painters’ workshops, glass engravers, tapestry artists, and collectives of artisans and artists. This environment, infused with calm and an almost mystical beauty, also led to the creation of the Festival de Musique de la Chaise-Dieu, initiated by the famous Hungarian pianist Georges Cziffra in 1966, after he visited the abbey and discovered its great organ.
Since then, this festival is held every August, serving as an international meeting place for classical and sacred music.
